Shelby Post 82 beat the Gaston Braves twice Tuesday to win its eighth State title. Shelby won by the scores of 10-6 and then 7-2, as they had to win twice over the Gaton team and they were able to accomplish that. Shelby had actually lost twice on the field prior to yesterday’s wins but were credited with a win by forfeit over High Point, who had beaten them 12-5 earlier in the tournament. High Point had been disqualified Sunday when they had been discovered to have played an inegible player because of double participation in another baseball event besides the Legion games, a violation of American Legion Baseball rules. The North Carolina Legion officials had tried to keep High Point’s team eligible in their first ruling, but a further protest by the Shelby team to the National organization was ruled in favor of the Shelby team in their quest to have the entire team disqualified. The win for Shelby in the two games Tuesday against the Gaston team avenged a loss to Gaston on Monday 8-1. Shelby now advances to the Southeast Regionals at Asheboro’s McCrary Park. Those games are due to start Thursday August 7th with Shelby playing the Georgia Champion in the third game of that day(4:30PM). Randolph County, as the host team, will also play in that double elimination tournament, taking on the Virginia State Champs at 7:30PM that night.
Congratulations go out to the Rowan County Little League 10U softball team, as they won the Southeast Regional tournament at Clarksville, Tennessee on Tuesday night. Rowan won 10-0 over West Virginia in four innings, as Taylor Walton pitched a one hitter. Rowan finished 5-1 for the tournament with their only loss of the tournament and then beat them twice. The team has now finished its season, as this age group does not go any further in national competition. The team is expected to arrive at Salisbury Community Park at 7:00PM Wednesday night.
