Dale Earnhardt Junior won Sunday’s race at the Martinsville Speedway, holding off Chase points leader and Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jeff Gordon to take the top finish. It was important to Earnhardt that he won on the tenth anniversary of the fatal airplaned crash of many of the Hendrick family. Lost on that day ten years ago were Rick Hendrick’s son, brother, twin nieces, the team general manager, head engine builder, a key sponsor representative, two Hendrick pilots, and a pilot for Tony Stewart. It was Earnhardt’s fourth win of the season and the first of his career at Martinsville, however it came a week after he was eliminated from the championship race. Chase driver Ryan Newman was third, Stewart fourth, and Chase drivers Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth were fifth and sixth. Gordon leads the points race by three over Ryan Newman, four over Logano, five over Kenseth, and seven over Hamlin. Bad finishes fro Brad Keselowski(31st) and Kevin Harvick(33rd) have put them in a position that they will need to get wins over the next two races in order to avoid elimination. This Sunday it’s the AAA Texas 500 from Texas Motor Speedway at Fort Worth, Texas. The race is scheduled to start at 3:00PM Sunday.
