Rowan County will swear in two new county commissioners Monday, then they will hear from the public about a planned downtown central office for the school system. The hearing takes place at 5pm on the second floor of the J. Newton Cohen Sr. Rowan County Administration Building.
As a member of the Board of Education, new commissioner Mike Caskey has opposed the downtown location, saying the school system could build or buy a cheaper building elsewhere. But he has told the Salisbury Post he does not think the location of the office is the commissioners’ decision.
Meanwhile, the owner of the Salisbury Mall said last week he’d be willing to sell the 315,000-square-foot shopping center to the school system. He did not however name his price for the property.
The board’s meeting officially begins at 3 p.m., when new commissioners Mike Caskey and Craig Pierce will be sworn in. The board also will recognize retiring commissioners Carl Ford and Raymond Coltrain.
