SALISBURY – Several teachers and schools were honored for various achievements during the Monday meeting of the Rowan Salisbury School Board.

Rowan -Salisbury Schools Teacher Of The Year Sakinah Riley  received the 2013 “Global Teacher Award” to participate in the summer professional development program in India. This award is through the Center for International Understanding and provided by the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation, Inc.

Three RSS teachers received the Energy United “Bright Ideas” grants

  • Renee Cunningham -Knox Middle School – Know Words of Wisdom ($1797)
  • Ashley Miller -China Grove Middle School – PBL Makes Learning Transformation ($2000)
  • Lynn Bradley -West Rowan Middle School – Microscopically Challenged ($1950)

Energy United representative Keith Wingler, from the Economic Development Team, will present the awards.

And Henderson Independent High School was one of 12 recipients across the country to receive a $10,000 grant from Seeds of Change, maker of nutritious organic foods. The “Share the Good” grants support community-based gardening and sustainable farming.

Henderson was selected from more than 13,000 entries and nominations received as part of the program to enhance the environmental, economic, and social well-being of gardens, farms, farmers and communities.

The school plans to use the grant to build several garden plots and a compost area on campus.  They will use the produce to supplement both the backpack and culinary programs in addition to using the gardens as an outdoor classroom for the science classes.
