Man describes frightening attack at Wells Fargo ATM

SALISBURY – For the second time in three nights an attempted robbery at gunpoint has occurred at the Wells Fargo ATM on W. Innes near Grove Street.

Just before midnight on Thursday a man went to the ATM, according to the police report.  The man had heard about the robberies in the area, so he left the engine running on his car.  As he walked towards the ATM, the man says two young black men came running towards him.

The alleged victim said that one of the men was carrying a rifle.

As the man reached his car he was struck in the back of the head by the butt of the rifle.  He managed to get in the car.  The second attacker ran around to the passenger side of the car, beating on the window and demanding that the man open the door.  The man drover off to a nearby store and called police.  He said that he saw his attackers running across W. Innes towards the Super Speedwash.

The injury sustained by the victim was not serious, according to police.

On Friday morning police said they would be stepping up patrols in the area.  On Wednesday a man was approached by a man with a gun who tried to rob him.  That suspect and an accomplice were caught a short time later by police.
