SALISBURY – A registered sex offender is back behind bars after being charged with being around children while delivering newspapers on his route.
Stanley Lamar Champion was served on true bills of indictment of June, 2012, on his original charges. His sentence included becoming a registered sex offender and not being allowed to be around children.
Rowan Sheriff’s Office Investigator Carl Dangerfield, who is also a youth football coach said that parents at a football game Tuesday night told him they had been seeing a strange car at Wingate Drive and Highway 152, near a bus stop.
Neighbors were so concerned they were planning to block the exit to the road and question Champion about why he was stopping near the bus stop.
They told Dangerfield that the driver would park and sit for periods of time, and they described him as a “large white guy in a small blue car.”
Dangerfield said he would look, and went by that location Thursday morning. He found Champion at 6:10 am, pulled into a neighborhood.
Dangerfield noted that when Champion saw him, he drove around the cul de sac, then left.
Dangerfield stopped him. Champion told Dangerfield he was delivering newspapers. The investigators told Champion to finish the route and then come to the sheriff’s office at 8:30.
Champion did come to the sheriff’s office where he was arrested.
Bond on the charge and a probation violation is set at $30,000.
