Police said a 14-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle near Kannapolis Parkway near the intersection of Afton Run Street after she missed her school bus and tried to catch a second bus Wednesday morning.

Authorities said the accident happened about 6:30 a.m. Kannapolis Police Capt. Kenneth Jackson said the girl suffered several broken bones, but is expected to survive.   The driver of the vehicle is not expected to be charged, officers said.

Jackson said the teenager missed the bus at her normal pick-up location and attempted to cross Kannapolis Parkway to a second bus stop.  The teenager was taken to Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast.
