Teen's day at school goes up in smoke

SALISBURY – It had to be that smell.  When Jose Lopez, 18, walked in late for class at West Rowan High School on  Tuesday, a staff member noticed a very distinct smell that seemed to envelope the teen.

The staff member told the resource officer about his suspicion.  According to the report at the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy searched Lopez’ car in the student parking lot and found what he described as two “homemade smoking devices” made from plastic drink bottles.

Lopez was cited to possession of drug paraphernalia and simple possession of marijuana.
