The Salisbury City Council approved a zoning change to allow the 90 room, four story hotel to be built by a developer from High Point. The new hotel will stand beside the Courtyard Marriott on E. Innes.
The building on Jake Alexander Boulevard that used to carry the Holiday Inn name may soon become part of Livingstone College.
During Tuesday’s City Council meeting the college submitted a request to city staff to rezone the former Holiday Inn.
According to Salisbury’s Planning and Development Services Manager Preston Mitchell, Livingstone is proposing using the hotel for dormitories, classrooms, meeting spaces and training kitchens for the culinary program.
The Wallace family dropped the Holiday Inn franchise last year and renamed and operated the property as the Hotel Salisbury and Conference Center.
The City Council will hold a public hearing Sept. 2 on the rezoning request.
