Friday night, the Braves needed a masterful performance from starter Kris Medlen and got it with an eight inning shutout two hits allowed for him. Craig Kimbrel recorded another save with a scorless ninth, as Chris Johnson supplied the only run of the game with this twelfth home run of the season in the eighth inning. Chris Lee was the tough luck loser for the Phils. The St. Louis Cardinals also won and clinched the NL Central title with a 7-0 win over the Cubs at St. Louis. The two teams still remained tied for the National League’s best record with two more games against the same opponents the next two days. Also in the NL Wild card race, Pittsburgh beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Friday to take a two game lead with two games to go between the two teams in the final weekend of the regular season. They will be determining who will have the home field in their one game Wildcard game next week.
In the AL, Tampa Bay’s Seven game win streak was stopped by Toronto 6-3 and the loss dropped the Rays into a tie with Cleveland for the top wildcard spot after the Indians beat Minnesota 12-6. The Indians and Rays are both a game up on Texas heading into these last two days. The Rangers still hanging on to their chance for now, won their fifth game in a row Friday 5-3 over the Angels.
