College Basketball: Hurricanes blow out Duke!

By Howard Platt on January 24, 2013

A couple of games in the ACC, and top ranked Duke gets blown away in Miami by a surging Hurricanes squad 90-63.  With the score 14-13 in favor of the top ranked Blue Devils, Miami went on a 25-1 run to take permanent command of the game.  Miami led at the half 42-19, and never let Duke back in the game.  Durand Scott led Miami with 25 points, Kenny Kadji added 22.  It was the first time Miami had beaten a top ranked team (0-6 perviously) and it was the third largest margin of defeat for a number one ranked team in the history of college basketball.  Miami moved to 5-0 in the ACC, while Duke drops to 4-2 in the conference, 16-2 overall.

North Carolina rolled to a 79-63 win over Georgia Tech at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill.  Reggie Bullock led the scoring with 17 points, with P.J. Hairston adding fifteen, and James Michael McAdoo with fourteen.  UNC led the entire game for their third straight conference win, moving to 3-2 in the ACC.  Georgia Tech dropped to 0-5 in the conference.  Carolina plays at rival NC State Saturday in a game you can hear on Newsradio 1490, staring with pregame coverage at 6:00PM, and tipoff at 7:00PM

Two ACC games scheduled for Thursday night, with Clemson at Florida State and Virginia at Virginia Tech.

Other games from Wednesday night had Charlotte over Xavier in the Atlantic Ten 63-57.  Both teams are now 4-1 in the conference, with Charlotte now 16-3 overall, with Xavier now 11-7 overall.  Catawba swept Mars Hill, with the men winning 81-64 and the women won 69-62.  Tyrece Little had 20 points and ten rebounds in the Men’s game.  Elizabeth Merrit led the Lady Indians with 17 points.  Livingstone also swept a pair from Fayetteville State.  The men won 76-59, as Jody Hill had 15 points to lead the Blue Bears.  Livingstone upped its record to 14-3 overall, 6-2 in the CIAA.  The Lady Blue Bears upset Fayetteville State 83-78, as Kelcyn Manurs had 27 points.
