College Basketball: Tuesday Results

By Howard Platt on February 20, 2013

Tuesday was a busy night for the ACC, with four games on the slate.  North Carolina rolled past Georgia Tech 70-58 in Atlanta, as James Michael McAdoo led the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds.  The Tarheels forced 19 turnovers, many of those being steals that led to easy baskets.  Leslie McDonald added 15 off the bench, including four three pointers.  Carolina led by as many as twenty before settling for the 12 point win.  With the win, UNC goes to 18-8 overall, 8-5 in the ACC, which now ties them for third with NC State and Virginia.

NC State had one of their more impressive performances on their home court, dismantling Florida State 84-66.  Freshman T. J. Warren had season highs of 31 points and 13 rebounds, with C.J. Leslie adding 19 points.  The Wolfpack led 40-30 at halftime and kept gradually increasing the margin.  State is now 19-7 overall, and 8-5 in the ACC, and heads to Chapel Hill for a showdown with North Carolina on Saturday afternoon (Newsradio 1490, 3:00PM airtime, 4:00PM tipoff)

#2 rated Miami remained unbeaten in the ACC, but had to squeak out a tough 54-50 win over Virginia at Coral Gables, Fla.  Reggie Johnson made a tie breaking layup with 5.5 seconds left, and then after a steal, Durand Scott added two clutch free throws to secure the victory.  The Hurricanes moved to 13-0 in the ACC (a three and a half game lead over Duke) and 22-3 overall.

Boston College surprised Maryland in Massachusetts 69-58.  Freshman Olivier Hanlan had a career-high 26 points for BC, and Eddie Odio had 11 rebounds.

No games in the ACC Wednesday night, but Duke is at Virginia Tech Thursday in a game that can be heard on Newsradio 1490, with an airtime of 8:00PM for at 9:00PM tipoff.  Duke will enter with a 9-3 conference record.

In a couple other games on the National scene, top ranked Indiana got a huge win for them at #4 Michigan State 72-68, giving them a one game lead in the Big Ten and their first win at East Lansing in 19 years.  The Hoosiers moved to 24-3 overall, 12-2 in the Big Ten and solidified their hold on the nation’s Number one spot.  Also Missouri rallied from thirteen down to overtake SEC foe, Florida 63-60.

Wednesday night Catawba is at Mars Hill for a Women’s/Men’s Doubleheader starting at 6:00PM and Livingstone is hosting St. Augustine’s for their doubleheader starting with the Women’s game at 5:30PM.  Southern Conference games include Furman at Davidson, Western Carolina at Charleston, and The Citadel at Appalachian State.
