A threatening weather forecast moved up the start of the F & M Bank Classic for Rowan County and Cabarrus County High School Baseball teams, as they were starting Wednesday at CMC Northeast Stadium in Kannapolis to try to avoid at least one day of rain at the event. The activity was originally scheduled to start Thursday. Wednesday’s lineup was including starting at 9:00 AM: Mt. Saturday is a rain date in case there are postponements and the games get backed up. The county with the best record will have the bragging rights in the competition. The tournament field was expanded from eight to ten teams this year, with the addition of Salisbury and Concord. Tickets are $6.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, and children under four are free. A three day tournament pass for adults is fifteen dollars, twelve dollars for students and seniors. Carson has the top record of any of the teams with a 12-2 record.
Also in High School Baseball, Tuesday, North Rowan lost to North Moore 5-2 Tuesday night. The Cavaliers hurt themselves with four errors and 12 men left on base. North is due to play at West Davidson Wednesday in a non-conference game.
Catawba lost a doubleheader to powerful Mount Olive Tuesday 4-3 and 8-6. The Indians led in both games, but the Trojans, ranked number two in the nation in Division Two, came back from a 2-0 deficit in the first game, and then rallied from being down 6-2 in the nightcap. Paul Kronenfield had a three run homer in the second game, while Chris Dula hit his thirteenth homer in the first game. Catawba is now 27-13 for the season, while Mt. Olive is now 33-4.
The Atlanta Braves are back on the field Wednesday in Atlanta against the Phillies. First pitch is 7:10 PM, with pregame coverage on Newsradio 1490 starting at 5:55 PM. The Braves conclude their series with the Phillies on Thursday, then welcome the Chicago Cubs in on Friday and begin a weekend series.
