High School Basketball

By Howard Platt on January 5, 2013

It was a busy Friday night for Rowan County teams on the Basketball courts.  West Rowan nipped East Rowan in Boys action at the East gym, as West’s Celexus Long hit a three pointer with less than a second left to give the Falcons a 51-50 victory.  Long’s shot came from the deep left corner overcoming at twenty-six point performance from the Mustangs Donte Means.  Long wound up with 15, as the Falcons upped their North Piedmont Conference record to 2-1, and 3-10 overall.  East dropped to 4-9, 1-2 in the NPC.  The West Girls had to rally from a 16 point defecit and trailed 20-9 at halftime, but took a 55-47 win over their East counterparts.  Shaw Steele led the Lady Falcons with 34 points, 25 in the second half to hike the team to 13-0. East held West to just nine points in the first half, but were outscored 46-29 in the second half.

North Rowan’s Boys blitzed Chatham Central in the first half, then coasted to a 67-42 win in Spencer.  The Cavaliers led 34-10 at halftime.  They improved to 6-0 in the Yadkin Valley Conference, 10-3 overall.  In the Girls game, the Lady Cavs played without their best player, Special Washington, but still won 43-37 against another top contender in Chatham Central in their conference.  Demeria Robinson led North with 18 points, as they upped their mark to 5-1 in the YVC, 5-5 overall.

Salisbury split their opening conference matchup with West Davidson.  The Boys game was won by the Green Dragons of West Davidson 56-44, with Austin Teague leading the winners with 21 points.  Salisbury won the Girls game 62-40, with Brielle Blair scoring 24 for the Lady Hornets.

Carson extended First place Statesville to the brink, but fell just short in overtime of pulling the upset, as the Boys Greyhounds prevailed 81-75.  Carson’s Tre Williams had a career high 37 points in the loss, as the Cougars had rallied from an eleven point deficit in the third quarter to surge ahead at one time, and then a tie in regulation.  It was the second overttime loss this year for the Carson Boys.  In the Girls game, a slow start by the Lady Cougars, but then a strong second half in a 56-31 win over theier Statesville counterparts.  Allison Blackwell led all scorers with 17 points, as Carson went to 2-0 in the NPC.

And South Rowan took a 67-52 win over North Iredell at the South Gym.  Qwan Rhyne led the Raiders with 19 points, as ten players scored for South in the win.  A 20-7 lead after the first quarter set the pace for the Raiders.  In the Girls game, it was North Iredelll coming out on top 47-40 despite 22 points for the Lady Raiders, Cassidy Chipman.

Next High School Basketball Broadcast on Newsradio 1490 and 1490wstp.com will be Tuesday night, when West Rowan hosts Salisbury, with coverage starting at 7:30PM for the Boys game.
