SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) – A freshman athlete is being treated for his injuries after investigators say he was shot in the stomach on the campus of Salisbury High School on Monday.

WBTV has learned that a group of young men from “out of town” approached the school on Monday around 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon, after school had let out for the day.

Investigators say the group went into the school’s gym and got into an argument with the students inside.

The argument spilled into the streets, according to investigators, and a freshman was shot in the stomach.

He was taken to the Novant Health Rowan Medical Center by a friend.¬† A source told WBTV the student “should be okay.”

Police have not made any arrests, but say they believe they know who did it.

According to the school’s website, a girl’s JV basketball game was scheduled for Monday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

WBTV has a crew at the scene working to gather more details.
