College Football: Great Weekend for Local Schools

A shocking Upset win for Catawba, a decisive CIAA win for Livingstone this past Saturday.  Catawba, stunned nationally ranked and previously unbeaten Carson Newman 25-22.  The Indians won despite being out rushed 232-20, committing four turnovers to none for the Eagles, and missed having their placekicker/punter Chad Hollandsworth who was injured.  Quarterback Danny O’Brien took up the slack with 444 yards passing and Linebacker Jason Taylor had sixteen tackles to lead an inspired defense.  Carson Newman missed a 33 yard field goal that could have tied the game and sent it into overtime.  Both teams are now 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the SAC.

Livingstone rolled to a road CIAA win at Lincoln Saturday 35-7.  Quarterback Drew Powell had four touchdown passes, going 16-22 in the air, and the Bears running game supported him with 215 yards rushing, including 134 yards and a touchdown from top running back, Justin Forte.  Livingstone move to 2-2 overall.  That’s the first time their record has been this good after four games since 1999.  They host Virginia Union this coming Saturday. 

In the Carolinas Saturday, North Carolina was thrashed by East Carolina55-31, Duke got past Troy 38-31, NC State romped past Central Michigan 48-14, Clemson easily handled Wake Forest 56-7, Charlotte won ove Presbyterian 45-21, and Charleston Southern surprised Appalachian State in Boone 27-24. 

This Saturday North Carolina heads to Virginia Tech.  The game will kickoff at 12:30PM, with an airtime of 11:30AM for the Tar Heel sports network.  The game will be carried on Newsradio 1490.
