Community service day at NCTM; lots of freebies!

SPENCER – The N.C. Transportation Museum will host area community service organizations, local government organizations, public utilities and more during Community Service Day this Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Visiting these organizations is free to the public.

Organizations as varied as Salisbury-Rowan Utilities, the Spencer Police and Fire Departments, the N.C. State Highway Patrol, the Rowan County Animal Shelter, Magnolia Gardens and others will be set up at the museum.  For a full list of attendees, please visit www.nctrans.org and click on Events in the top menu.

Highlights of the event will be the Spencer Fire Department displaying a 30-foot smoke house trailer to teach kids and adults about fire safety.  The smoke house is on loan from the Salisbury Fire Department. Spencer’s crews will also provide a fire truck for an up close look for the kids and cruisers from both the N.C. State Highway Patrol and the Spencer Police Department can be viewed.

Salisbury-Rowan Utilities will a have kids’ cornhole game, coloring books, recycling information and a display featuring “How Water Is Treated From River to Tap.” The city of Salisbury will be bringing a city bus for visitors to walk through, an information table and bus routes. The city of Salisbury’s Fats, Oils and Grease program will bring their mascot, “Greasy,” weather permitting.

There is truly something for everyone.  The Rowan County Animal Shelter will also have information on adoptable animals. Educational groups like Smart Start Rowan and Salisbury Tutoring Academy will provide information on how to better teach children and receive aid when needed.  Magnolia Gardens and Comfort Keepers will have information on extended care living. Goodwill Career Connections will prsent information for job seekers.

The town of Spencer’s Eastern Star will have a food booth set up and information about their good works to make for a full day of family fun. Admission to all Community Service Day booths and activities is free.

Saturday also marks the second of the museum’s Second Saturday promotions this summer.  Cars: Art By Design will be offered all day long.  The program allows visitors to explore the museum’s antique automobile collection and learn the unique art concepts that went into their design.

2nd Saturdays 2013 combines arts and heritage with food and fun on July 13 and August 10 at all of North Carolina’s 37 museums and Historic Sites.

Regular admission is required for 2nd Saturdays events.  Admission-only prices are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and active military and $4 for children 3-12 years of age.  Admission plus the train ride is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and active military and $8 for children 3-12 years of age.  Children two and under are always free.
