SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) – Police in Salisbury are searching for a shooter after a freshman student athlete was shot outside of a high school gym while reportedly trying to break up a fight.

According to source, freshman football and basketball player Shaleek 16-year-old Shaleek Williams (Source: Facebook)

Williams was shot on the campus of Salisbury High School on Monday afternoon.

Sources told WBTV the shooting happened while Williams was trying to break up a fight between two people.

WBTV has learned that a group of young men from “out of town” approached the school on Monday afternoon around 3 p.m., after school had let out for the day.

Investigators say the group went into the school’s gymnasium and got into an argument with students inside.

That argument spilled into the streets, according to investigators, and family members say Shaleek Williams was shot in the stomach.

After the shooting, two people were reportedly seen running from the scene.  A source says a gun was dropped in the area.

WBTV has learned that Williams ran from the area shouting “someone help me, I’ve been shot.”

That’s when a woman reportedly saw him, opened her vehicle door and yelled at him to get into the car.

She took him to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, which is several blocks from the school. A source told WBTV that the bullet went through his abdomen and Williams “should be okay.”

Many students reportedly showed up at the hospital and officials are trying to get them to leave.

Police have not made any arrests, but say they believe they know who was involved in the shooting. Investigators believe this incident is related to an altercation that occurred over the weekend.

A source says Williams may not have been the intended target.

Both Salisbury High School and Livingstone College were placed into a lockdown mode during the initial investigation process,  but the lockdowns have since been lifted.

Officers stopped two people near South Jackson Street and are questioning them to see if they are connected to the shooting.

According to the school’s website, a girl’s JV basketball game was scheduled for Monday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. That has since been canceled.
