High School Basketball: West Girls lose for the first time

A couple of High School Basketball matchups involving Rowan County teams Wednedsay night.  The West Rowan Girls, previously undefeated in 15 games overall, lost for the first time this year to North Piedmont Conference foe North Iredell 48-40 at the West gym.  West had led by ten at halftime 27-17, but were outscored by the Lady Raiders 19-6 in the third quarter and then 12-7 in the fourth quarter.  Shay Steele was held to just 13 points, and NeNe Dixon had 11.  The West Girls are now 4-1 in the NPC, while North Iredell, who lost their first conference game to Carson Tuesday night, is now 5-1 in the NPC.  In the Boys game, West won its fourth in a row, downing North Iredell 71-59.  West was led by Celexus Long with 22 points, with Daisean Reddick adding 13.  West led 38-30 at the half and helped to put it away in the third quarter.  The Falcons improved to 4-1 in the NPC, 6-10 overall.  They will host Statesville Friday, with broadcast coverage starting at 7:30PM.  Statesville’s Boys lead the NPC standings.

South Rowan and Salisbury split their doubleheader.  The Salisbury Girls sprinted out to a 19-3 lead in the first quarter and went on to beat the Lady Raiders 63-38.  Brielle Blair led the Lady Hornets with 25 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals.  South’s Avery Locklear had 22 points.  Salisbury improved to 8-8 overall, while South dropped to 4-13.  In the Boys game, South Rowan won 58-41, with Shawn Spry leading the Raiders with 18 points.  Tyler Petty had 15 points  and eight rebounds.  South cruised to a 28-16 lead by halftime, and went on from there for the convincing win.  It was the seventh loss in a row for the Hornets, and dropped them to 4-12, while South improved to 10-8. 

Two County games have been moved up to Thursday night from Friday in anticipation of a messy weather forecast .  East Rowan heads to Carson and South Rowan travels to West Iredell.  Varsity Girls are expected to start at 6:30PM.  Friday night, as mentioned Statesville comes to West Rowan and Salisbury is scheduled at Thomasville.
