Local Baseball

The F & M Bank Classic started on Wednesday at CMC Northeast Stadium in Kannapolis, the home of the Intimidators.  Four teams from Rowan County and four from Cabarrus County are participating.  In results from Wednesday, Carson literally squeezed past Salisbury 1-0, while South Rowan squashed North Rowan 13-0 in a ten run rule five inning game that capped the evening.  In the opening pitching duel. Salisbury’s Riley Myers was the tough luck loser despite pitching eight innings and allowing  just an unearned run via a squeeze bunt from Brandon Sloop that got John Patella home.  Carson’s John Daugherty tossed seven innings of scoreless ball, despite giving up nine hits and getting himself in and out of jams.  Dyland Snider preserved the win with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth and got a save.  Carson upped its record to 15-4, while Salsibury dropped to 4-14. 

South Rowan smashed North Rowan in the final game of the day 13-0 in five innings, the game shortened due to the ten run rule.  Bo Corriher and Walker Joyce combined to pitch a five hit shutout.  North’s Brandon White took the loss, with six of the eight runs scored against him being unearned, as the Cavaliers hurt themselves with five errors.  Chase Labbe led South’s hitting with a 3-4 day, that included a double, triple, and two RBI’s. 

In other results, Mount Pleasant defeated A.L. Brown 8-1 and Robinson downed Northwest Cabarrus 4-1.  The Tournament continues at Kannapolis Thursday.  Loser’s bracket games are being played at the A.L. Brown field starting at 11:00AM  with Salisbury taking on Northwest Cabarrus and that is followed up by North Rowan against Kannapolis at 1:30PM.  At CMC Northeast Stadium, the winners bracket games start at 4:00PM with Carson vs. Robinson and at 6:30PM South Rowan going against Mt. Pleasant.  The tournament will continue through Friday.  Tickets are six dollars a day for adults. 

The East Rowan Tournament is starting Thursday with three games at Granite Quarry’s Staton field.  Starting at 1:00PM, Uwharrie Charter is matched up with Mooresville, then at 4:00PM host East Rowan vs. West Iredell, and concludes Thursday activity with West Rowan vs. North Iredell at 7:00PM.  Each day’s games have already been predetermined with games continuing through Saturday.  Friday’s schedule will have Uwharrie Charter vs. West Iredell at 1:00PM, East Rowan vs. North Iredell at 4:00PM, and West Rowan vs. Mooresville.  And Saturday’s games will also start at 1:00PM with Uwharrie Charter against North Iredell, West Rowan and West Iredell at 4:00PM, and East Rowan against Mooresville at 7:00PM.

College Baseball has Catawba starting play in the SAC Tournament at Forest City, NC against Anderson at Noon.  Other first round games set for Thursday have  Wingate vs Brevard at 3:45PM, and Lincoln Memorial vs. Newberry at 7:30PM.  The double-elmination tournament continues through the weekend.  Catawba is the top seed and regular season champion for the conference and most likely wrap up a Regional berth if they win the tournament. 

In other College results from Wednesday, North Carolina beat Liberty 3-1, NC State pounded UNC Wilmington 10-2, Charlotte handled Wake Forest 12-4, Clemson over Western Carolina 11-3, and Gardner Webb got by Appalachian State 10-6.
