NC Sports Hall of Fame

Induction ceremonies for the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame are being held Thursday night in Raleigh.  Among this year’s Class are Bill Guthridge, the longtime assistant basketball coach at North Carolina under Dean Smith and then later the first replacement as head coach when Smith retired.  As Head Coach, Guthridge was 90-28 in three seasons and led the Heels to two Final Fours.  Others being inducted include:  Ron Francis, player and now a minority owner of the Carolina Hurricanes…Rich McGeorge, a 1971 graduate of Elon, who was a first round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers…Kelvin Bryant, former North Carolina and Washington Redskins Running back..Wade Garrett a premier Fast-pitch softball pitcher..Marion Kirby, longtime High School Football coach at Edenton and Greensboro Page, compiling a 278-65-8 record…Hugh Morton, developed Grandfather Mountain and World-class photographer…Marty Sheets, who holds 250 Special Olympics medals in a variety of sports, and Mildred F. Southern, a longtime supporter of Tennis in North Carolina.
