NC State upset at Wake

An upset in ACC Basketball Tuesday night, as Wake Forest surprised #18 NC State in Winston Salem 86-84.  Freshman Devin Thomas had a season high 25 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots, and Travis McKie added sixteen, including two free throws in the last 3.4 seconds to give Wake the winning points.  NC State had led by as many as sixteen points in the first half, twelve at halftime, then Wake rallied and led by ten in the second half before State battled back and set up a frantic finish at the end in the last four and a half minutes.  Rodney Purvis led the Pack with 18 points, but State blew opportunities at the end to pull the game out.  State had blown out the Demon Deacons by 36 and 25 points in Winston Salem the two previous seasons.  State dropped to 15-4 overall, 4-2 in the ACC.  Wake improved to 10-8 overall, 3-3 in the ACC.  Also in the ACC Tuesday night, Maryland defeated Boston College 64-59.

Wednesday night, top ranked Duke travels to Miami to try to get even in the standings with the Hurricanes.  Miami leads the ACC with a 4-0 conference mark, 13-3 overall.  Duke, back to being ranked number one in the nation, is 3-1 in the ACC, 16-1 overall.  The game tips off at 7:00PM.  North Carolina hosts Georgia Tech in Chapel Hill, also on Wednesday night.  Carolina has won its last two impressivley over Flordia State on the road and Maryland at home.  Georgia Tech is in last place in the ACC with an 0-4 conference record, but 10-6 overall.  The game will be broadcast via the Tarheel Sports Network on Newsradio 1490, with pregame at 8:00PM, and tipoff at 9:00PM. 

Also locally, Catawba hosts Mars Hill in a SAC Doubleheader, starting with the Women’s game at 6:00PM, the Men at 8:00PM, and Livingstone is hosting CIAA foe Fayetteville State in a Doubleheader, starting with the Women’s game at 5:30PM, and the Men’s game due to start at 7:30PM.  Also Wednesday night, Charlotte hosts Atlantic Ten Foe, Xavier, at 7:00PM at Halton Arena..The Forty-Niners are 13-3 overall, 3-1 in the conference, while Xavier is 4-0 in the conference, 11-6 overall.
