CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A Captain with the Charlotte Fire Department was arrested on Friday after police say he stole prescription drugs from a patient while assisting Medic with a call.

Charlie David Morris Jr, 49, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor larceny.

On Tuesday, August 26, Morris was assisting Medic with the transportation of a patient at a home on the 9300 block of Broken Pine Lane. Investigators say that while crews were inside the home assisting the patient, Morris took seven Dilaudid prescription pills that belonged to them.

After the scene was cleared, the family of the patient contacted Medic about the missing medication. Medic then called the fire department.

The fire department began investigating, and did drug and polygraph tests with all the firefighters who responded to the call.

On Wednesday, Charlotte Fire Chief Jon Hannan said, Morris “readily confessed” and “admitted” to taking the pills.

Then on Thursday, Hannan said Morris “resigned in lieu of termination.” Morris had been with the department for 22 years.

Detectives obtained a warrant on Morris on Friday, and he turned him to police that afternoon.

Police say the incident is still under investigation.
