Salisbury man presented Order of the Long Leaf Pine

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) – A big award was presented to a former North Carolina Corrections Officer.

Steve Yost received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Thursday morning in Salisbury.

The state’s highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is presented to outstanding North Carolinians who have a proven record of service to the State. Persons who have demonstrated a lifetime of service to the State may qualify.

Also, state employees may upon retirement be nominated if they have at least thirty years of exemplary service to North Carolina.

Yost is credited with saving a life in Rowan County. He also survived being stabbed during an assault by an inmate.

Yost says receiving the award was a complete surprise.

“This is certainly something special. I thank all the citizens, I thank the governor all the people, my wife, my family and the people

I worked with during the last 30 and a half years,” Yost told WBTV.

Lieutenant governor Dan Forest presented the award.
