Tarheels beat Duke

North Carolina kept its streak going Thursday night, rallying in the second half for a win over arch rival Duke at the Smith Center 74-66.  Marcus Paige scored all thirteen of his points in the second half, Leslie McDonald added a season high 21 points, and the Tar Heels held Duke to just 36 percent shooting in the second half and only 5-22 from three point range for the game.  Jabari Parker and Quinn Cook had 17 points apiece.  Duke led 51-40 with 15:07 left.  They went six minutes without a point one time in the second half.  It was the first win for the Heels in three years over the Blue Devils in Chapel Hill.  The fifth Ranked Blue Devils droppped to 21-6 overall, 10-4 in the ACC.  North Caroliina was winning its eighth in a row, and improved to 19-7 overall, 9-4 in the conference.  Carolina hosts Wake Forest Saturday at Noon, with Newsradio 1490 pregame coverage starting at 11:00AM.  Duke hosts Syracuse Saturday night at 6:00PM. 

In other regional results from Thursday, Middle Tennessee clobbered Charlotte 71-49, Western Carolina defeated Appalachian State 74-61, Wofford smashed Furman 70-50, and East Carolina was a 75-68 winner over Louisiana Tech 75-68.  In Women’s games, North Carolina beat Virginia 80-74, while DUke defeated NC State 83-70.  Johnson C. Smith and Winston Salem State will play five minutes of overtime Friday afternoon to complete their game that was stopped at the end of regulation due to a last pass hitting the light fixture in the J.C. Smith Brayboy gym that made it unsafe to continue Wednesday night.  The action picks up at 2:00PM with the score tied at 76-76. 

In top twenty five action Thursday, Michigan State hit a school record 17 three pointers in a win over Purdue 94-79.  #21 Connecticut won over Temple 68-55, #22 Memphis got past Rutgers 64-59, and BYU upset 25th ranked Gonzaga 73-65.
